When Should You Actually Book Your Honeymoon?

If you've started honeymoon planning, you've probably already realized something:
Everyone gives different advice.
Some couples book 18 months in advance. Others wait until after the wedding. Some people tell you to book flights early, while others swear that last-minute deals are better.
So... what's actually the best timeline?
The truth is: the ideal honeymoon booking window depends on your destination, travel style, budget, and priorities. But in general, most couples should begin planning much earlier than they think — especially for international travel, luxury resorts, and popular honeymoon destinations.
As a travel advisor, here's the timeline I typically recommend for honeymoon planning:
12-18 Months Before Travel
Dreaming & Research Phase
This is the fun stage.
You don't necessarily need to book yet, but this is the perfect time to decide what kind of honeymoon experience you want, discuss budget expectations, check passport expiration dates, narrow down destinations, start a honeymoon fund or registry, and decide if you want to delay your honeymoon.
This stage is especially important for couples considering overwater bungalows, safari honeymoons, Greece or Europe during peak season, Bora Bora or the Maldives, luxury suites and villas, and first and business class flights.
8-12 Months Before Travel
Ideal Booking Window for Many Honeymoons
For most couples, this is the sweet spot.
This is when I recommend officially booking all-inclusive Caribbean honeymoons, Europe trips, Hawaii, luxury resorts, safari experiences, and premium flight cabins.
Booking during this timeframe typically gives you better resort availability, better flight availability, more room category options, more flexible payment timelines, and less stress overall.
Many honeymoon packages only require a deposit upfront, with the final payment due much closer to travel (often 60-120 days before departure). That means you can lock in your dream trip without paying for everything immediately.
6-8 Months Before Travel
Still a Great Time to Book
If you're getting started here, don't panic.
There are still plenty of amazing options available - especially if your travel dates are flexible, you're open on destination, you aren't traveling over major holidays, or you don't need ultra-specific luxury suites.
However, this is usually the point where premium room categories begin selling out, nonstop flights become more expensive, luxury resorts become limited, and honeymoon perks may become harder to secure.
3-5 Months Before Travel
Where Things Start Getting Riskier
This is where I see couples run into the most stress.
At this point, pricing often increases, flight schedules become less ideal, luxury availability shrinks significantly, and itinerary flexibility becomes limited.
But you can still plan an amazing honeymoon! You may just have to compromise on destination, resort choice, flight times, room category, and/or budget expectations.
What About Delayed Honeymoons?
I love delayed honeymoons. More and more couples are waiting weeks or even months after the wedding before traveling. (We waited to go on our first wedding anniversary!)
Weddings are exhausting. A delayed honeymoon can allow couples to recover financially, spread out PTO, avoid stress, travel during better weather seasons, and save for upgraded experiences. The best part is you can still book your honeymoon well in advance, even if you aren't traveling immediately after the wedding.
My Biggest Honeymoon Booking Advice
Prioritize what matters most to YOU.
Some couples care most about luxury accommodations, nonstop flights, excursions, privacy, food, nightlife, adventure, or relaxation. There is no "right" honeymoon, only the right honeymoon for you.
This is one of the biggest reasons many couples choose to work with a travel advisor. Instead of spending hours trying to compare thousands of options online, you get personalized guidance, destination recommendations, logistics support, and a honeymoon designed specifically around your priorities.
